This really pointless gift to myself (I just like hardbacks OK!!!) improved my outlook after another sub day in which it seemed the room might never get quiet.
P.S. aparadoxinflux your copy was in the same box!

The above is Cara Gee, a Canadian actress born in Calgary, Alberta of Ojibwe decent.  She stars as Kat Loving in the new CBC Drama Strange Empire, coming to television this fall.  She’s garnered a Best Actress nomination at the 2nd Canadian Screen Awards for her performance in Empire of Dirt.  Primarily a stage actress in Toronto where her acting credits have included productions of Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad, Daniel MacIvor’s Arigato, Tokyo, Tomson Highway’s The Rez Sisters Cliff Cardinal’s Stitch, Birdtown and Swanville’s 36 Little Plays About Hopeless Girls and Louise Dupré's Tout comme elle.

And holy crap, if ever Black Mask & Pale Rider was made into a television series and if Andrea Menard wasn’t available or executives wanted to go with a younger actress, I think I found a backup to play Shani Wennemein.

Guys.

Cara Gee.

She’s so goddamn talented and phenomenal and we’re going to see a Tatiana-level rise for her. One can hope.

CBC’s latest show is Strange Empire, a women-driven Western. Here’s the details:

STRANGE EMPIRE is a Western whose heroes are women. With most of their men gone, and those who remain battling for control, the women struggle to survive, to find their independence, and to build a life in which to thrive and raise families. As the stories of Janestown’s citizens unfold we see the clash between a power-hungry father and son and the deep prejudices among races, but also the start of something akin to community in this Wild West. Western stories take civilization as a goal; they begin in blood, and end in the morality of Main Street. Starring Cara Gee as Kat Loving, Melissa Farman as Dr. Rebecca Blithely and Tattiawna Jones as Isabelle Slotter.

I can’t remember the last time I was interested in a CBC show, but this one’s caught my attention. I was let down by the last few attempts at a Western TV show (Hell on Wheels, that means you) but I’ll give this one a chance. Also, female-centric Westerns are super trendy right now - The Keeping Room with Brit Marling premiered at TIFF this year, and Hilary Swank’s got The Homesmen coming out soon.

Anyway, check out the trailer above for Strange Empires. It’s got violence, mysticism and ladies kicking ass, and that’s enough for me to check out the pilot.
